Breaking the glass ceiling
Updated: Apr 4, 2019
Why negotiation is key to unlocking endless potential.

Throughout the years, I have had the privilege of meeting very talented and skilled women who should be in leadings role. Unfortunately, many of them were very shy, timid, lacked confidence, and were very pessimistic. Don't find yourself in these shoes, your only holding yourself back.
“Be bold or you will continue to get the short end of the stick.”
Time and time again, we hear stories about people complaining regarding pay and unfair wages. It's easy to play the blame game and be upset. This reminds me of a man who had a field and needed workers to work the land. The land owner offered several employment opportunities for those who wanted to accept the opportunity. Employee A accepts the early start shift position and agrees to $8/hr. Mid-day the land owner hires Employee B to start mid-day shift and agrees to$12/hr rate. By evening, the land owner contracts Employee C for evening start shift at an agreed rate of $16/hr. By the end of the day, the employer pays each employee the promised wages. As a result employee A is upset regarding salary, claims inequality, and unfair labor practices. The only person responsible for the outcome is the employee, Employee A agreed to the terms, salary, and conditions.
THE PROBLEM
Many people don't know how to negotiate. This comes to bite many people in the butt when seeking employment and competitive compensation. Many women have been known to suck at negotiating their salary because of fear of rejection, not getting the job, and being seen as demanding. This has also significantly impacted employment opportunities. For instance, if a job posting has 10 specific requirements to be considered for employment a man is likely to apply if they only meet 3 of the 10 requirements. Women have been known to do the opposite. If they have 8 out of the 10 requirements they tend to not try or simply disqualify themselves. For years, breaking the glass ceiling has been a crippling experience for many women. So what can be done to break the glass ceiling?
THE ANSWER
Be bold or you will continue to get the short end of the stick. Be open to negotiation, make bold offers, counter offers and be prepared to walk away if an agreement can't be reached. Ultimately, you know what your time, skills, and knowledge is worth. Deal or No Deal? is the defining question that creates the building blocks for unlocking endless possibilities. Because of this developed quality, many women have shattered the glass ceiling and have enjoyed endless growth and opportunity. Many organizations need great women leaders who stand their ground, are assertive, and know how to negotiate on behalf of the organization.
